Activist faces trial in Tashkent Region
Uznews.net – The trial of Habibulla Ilmuradov who has turned into an enemy of prosecutors, taxmen and police for his human rights activities started in the Yangiyul town court yesterday.

Ilmuradov, 52, has to prove his innocence and Tashkent Region officials’ interest in jailing him to Judge Ilhom Normatov.

The activist, known as Oybek in Yangiyul, was detained on 23 June on charges of storing drugs with the aim of selling and fraud.

The defendant pleaded not guilty saying that drugs had been planted in his home and had not committed any fraud, but fought to restore the violated rights of his fellow citizens.

Ilmuradov helped Malika Shamsiyeva, an aunt of the former deputy prosecutor of Yangiyul, Farruh Bakiyev, claim her rights to her house, when Bakiyev wanted to evict her after his uncle was admitted to a psychiatric hospital from prison where he served a term for rape.

After Ilmuradov helped Shamsiyeva retain her house, Bakiyev threatened him that he would plant drugs on him and convict him.

Yesterday’s trial was open and Ilmuradov’s wife and children attended it. The next hearing will be held on 1 November.
