Uzbekistan: Human rights society calls for justice
The Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan (HRSU) has disseminated the message, one more time paying attention to the fact of human rights activists’ persecution by the government of the country.
The release indicates that since the date of establishment (February 2, 1992) HRSU has been the subject of systematic persecution by the government of Uzbekistan. HRSU directed the application for registration in the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan six times, but was always rejected. In 17 years 28 members of HRSU were convicted by trump charges while 17 other members left the country. Today, 9 members of HRSU are in jail.
HRSU leaders Norboi Kholjigitov, Alisher Karamatov, Azam Farmonov were unfairly sentenced to long terms. They are also exposed to torture and brutal treatment. The human rights activists Yusuf Djuma (Sahroyi sherlar) and Azam Turgunov (Mazlum) have also faced tortures.
Those HRSU members, remaining free and residing in Uzbekistan, are constantly being chased by National security service and militia (Bakhodyr Namozov – the Head of initiative group for HRSU registration in Uzbekistan, Gulshan Karaeva – HRSU Head for Kashkadaria oblast, Mamir Azimov – HRSU coordinator in Djizak Oblast, Nodir Akhatov – HRSU Head in Karshi, Nurali Kubolov – HRSU member in Kashkadaria oblast). They are always invited for examination in police offices, public prosecutor’s office, Makhalla committees. Often times they are put under house arrest, prohibited to meet foreign delegations and diplomats of foreign embassies in Uzbekistan and restricted to participate in peaceful demonstrations.
HRSU message brings the list of human rights leaders, kept in jail:
Norboi Kholjigitov – HRSU Head in Ishtihan rayon of Samarqand Oblast; sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.
Khabibula Akpulatov – HRSU member in Ishtihan rayon of Samarqand oblast; sentenced to 6 years of jail.
Sattor Irzaev – HRSU member in Ishtihan rayon of Samarqand oblast; sentenced to 9 years of prison.
Alisher Karamatov – HRSU Head in Mirzabad rayon of Syr Darya oblast; sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment.
Nasim Isakov – HRSU member (city of Djizak); sentenced to 8 years of jail.
Djamshid Karimov – independent journalist, HRSU member in Djizak rayon, the correspondent of Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), the son of elder brother of Uzbek President Islam Karimov.
Zafar Rahimov – HRSU member in Kashkadarya oblast; sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment.
Yuldash Rasulev – HRSU member in Kashkadarya oblast; sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.
Yusuf Jumaev – popular poet, Sakhroyi sherlar human rights organization; sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
Mashrab Jumaev – Sakhroyi sherlar human rights organization; sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment.
Abdurasul Khudainazarov – the Head of Ezgulik human rights society in Angren, Tashkent oblast; sentenced to 9.5 years of imprisonment.
Solidjon Abdurakhmanov – the Head of International human rights society (IHRS) in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the journalist; sentenced to 10 years of jail.
Azam Turgunov – the Head of Mazlum human rights society, the member of Erk democratic party; sentenced to 10 years of prison.
The list also includes sons and nephews of Akhmadjon Madmarov, the Chairman of Independent Human Rights organization in Uzbekistan in Ferghana oblast, that serve sentence because of his active human rights activity. These are:
Abdulla Madmarov, convicted of religious views and suspicion of cooperation with Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Khabibula Madmarov, convicted of religious views and suspicion of cooperation with Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Abdulakhad Madmarov, convicted of religious views and suspicion of cooperation with Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Abdusamad Madmarov, convicted of religious views and suspicion of cooperation with Hizb ut-Tahrir.
HRSU points out that persecution of human rights activists by the government of Uzbekistan is brutal violation of Uzbek Constitution, International covenant on civil and political rights, ratified by Uzbekistan on September 28, 1995, UN declaration on human rights activists (Declaration on right and responsibility of parties, groups and bodies to stimulate and defend universally recognized human rights and major liberties, accepted by UN General Assembly on December 9, 1998), guidance of European Union on human rights (accepted by EU in 2004).
HRSU calls the government of Uzbekistan to immediately free all human rights leaders, sons and nephews of Akhmadjon Madmarov and accused journalist Dilmurod Sayid, investigate all cases, when human rights activists were exposed to tortures, insulting treatment, threats. Besides, HRSU demands to allow the visits of relatives and lawyers to imprisoned HRSU members as well as their access to medical service. HRSU also asks to immediately stop placing the members in psychiatric facilities and create conditions for liberal human rights activities
