Uzbekistan-UPDATE: Human rights defender Mr Gaybullo Jalilov transferred to another prison colony

Map of Uzbekistan

Front Line Defenders has learned from reliable sources that imprisoned human rights defender Mr. Gaybullo Jalilov was transferred from a colony in Zangiyat to the prison colony N64/62 situated in Navoi.

Gaybullo Jalilov is a member of the Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan and was involved in protecting the rights of Muslims in the Kashkadarya Region.

On 18 January 2010, Mr. Jalilov was originally sentenced to nine years in prison after he was found guilty of “organisation of criminal association”, “production or dissemination of materials constituting a threat to public security and public order” and “founding, leading and participating in religious extremist, separatist, fundamentalist and other forbidden organisations”. In September 2010, his term was prolonged to eleven years of imprisonment. Gaybullo Jalilov pleaded not guilty and was reportedly denied a request for prosecution witnesses to be questioned in court. In addition, it became clear during the court hearings that he had been subjected to torture during criminal investigations.

In April 2012, Gaybullo Jalilov’s family became concerned for his well-being, as during their attempt to visit him in Zangiyat, they were told that he had been transferred to a colony in Navoi, with no information on the exact location or on his physical or emotional state. The family received a letter from Mr. Jalilov confirming that he was transferred to Navoi colony N64/62.

Front Line Defenders calls on the Uzbek authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Gaybullo Jalilov, as he is being imprisoned solely as a result of his legitimate and peaceful work in the defence of human rights.
