The organizers of New York Fashion Week have canceled a planned show of designer clothes by the daughter of Uzbekistan’s leader Islam Karimov, whose regime has been accused of human rights abuses.
In a statement, the organizer of New York Fashion week said Gulnara Karimova’s show has been canceled because of what the statement called “various concerns.”
Karimova had due to present her “Guli” spring/summer 2012 collection to New York Fashion Week on September 15.
Karimova had shown a collection at New York Fashion Week in September of last year.
Responding to the cancellation of Karimova’s show, Human Rights Watch said it was glad New York Fashion Week would “no longer showcase a designer who represents such a repressive government.”
Karimova, 39, who is also Uzbekistan’s ambassador to Spain and to the United Nations in Geneva, was not immediately available for comment.
President Islam Karimov, who has ruled Uzbekistan since 1989, has been accused by human rights groups of regularly violating the rights of Uzbeks and blocking the development of democracy in the Central Asian country.
Almost 100 designers are showing their collections for spring/summer 2012 at New York Fashion Week.
