Uznews.net – Dmitriy Tikhonov, the controversial Uzbek human rights activist, has today been granted an exit visa to leave Uzbekistan, even though an appeal against the authorities’ initial refusal to issue the visa had been turned down.

“Yesterday evening I received a telephone call from the visa authorities and was told that I could come to collect my exit visa,” Tikhonov said. “They promised to issue it within two hours.”

Today, however, the Tashkent regional court upheld a lower court’s ruling that an exit visa would not be granted.

Tikhonov went in person to the visa department to remind them of yesterday’s telephone call. To his surprise, visa officials asked for his passport and returned it to him within half an hour together with his exit visa.
