Human rights activist attacked in Uzbek town of Karshi
This morning a group of unidentified women attacked Gulshan Karayeva, a member of the Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan (HRSU) in Kashkadarya region.

The rights activist left home to buy medicines for her ill son. When she came to a chemist’s shop located near school 10 and the regional courthouse, a group of young women, who looked like prostitutes, attacked her.

Tulkin Karayev, Gulshan’s brother living in Sweden, has said that the women beat up his sister, accusing her of going out on alleged dates with their husbands.

Gulshan Karayeva managed to break away and escape from the assaulting women. When this

news was being prepared, she was hiding in a shop on Uzbekistan Street.

This provocation, Tulkin Karayev thinks, was organised by local police and the National Security Service (SNB) in revenge on his sister for human rights activity.

This was not the first time when the head of the HRSU’s Kashkadarya region branch, Gulshan Karayeva, was bashed up by unknown people.

On 8 July 2011, she was beaten up by a 34-year old Kashkadarya resident, Arif Pardayev.

Pardayev was in the same taxi that she took from Tashkent to Karshi. Sitting in the back seat of the taxi, he began harassing Karayeva, who was sitting next to the driver, annoying and insulting her. Sometime later, he began beating her in the head with hands and a plastic bottle of water.

A day before this incident, on 7 July, someone poisoned her dog and strange people telephoned and told her all sorts of obscure things.

After independent media publications, Arif Pardayev was made answerable.

On 8 August, the Chirakchi district court in Kashkadarya found him guilty of “disorderly conduct” and sentenced him to a fine of 460,000 sums, or about 190 dollars at the exchange rate of that day.

Tulkin Karayev links today’s attack with the fact that Gulshan has refused to cooperate with the SNB, which she has publicly reported on Internet.

“Possibly, the SNB is taking revenge on her in this way,” Tulkin Karayev said.
